How to File a VAT201 Return: Box-by-Box Overview

What the VAT201 return actually asks for, section by section, from Box 1 through the net VAT due calculation.

VAT201 is the standard periodic VAT return filed through EmaraTax. It's built around two main sections — VAT on Sales and All Other Outputs, and VAT on Expenses and All Other Inputs — followed by a Net VAT Due calculation, across a 2-step wizard (the return itself, then Review & Declaration).

VAT on Sales and All Other Outputs (Boxes 1–8)

Standard-rated supplies are broken out into seven lines (1a–1g), one per emirate (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah), rather than a single combined figure — this is how VAT revenue gets attributed for emirate-level reporting. Separate boxes cover tax refunds under the Tourist Refund Scheme (Box 2, often pre-populated from the Planet Tax Free system), supplies subject to the reverse charge mechanism (Box 3), zero-rated supplies (Box 4), exempt supplies (Box 5), and goods imported into the UAE (Box 6, pre-populated from Customs data, with Box 7 alongside it for adjustments/corrections). Box 8 totals the whole section.

VAT on Expenses and All Other Inputs (Boxes 9–11)

Standard-rated expenses (Box 9) and reverse-charge-related input VAT (Box 10) are entered here, summing to a total recoverable input VAT figure (Box 11).

Net VAT Due (Boxes 12–14)

Box 12 is total output tax due, Box 13 is total recoverable input tax, and Box 14 — Payable Tax for the Period — is Box 12 minus Box 13. A positive Box 14 means tax is owed; a negative one means a refund or carry-forward credit. A separate question asks whether the Profit Margin Scheme applied to any supplies in the period.

Review & Declaration, and submission

The second step shows a read-only summary of everything entered (with an Edit link back to Step 1), the Taxable Person's registered details, and the authorized signatory's declaration — confirming the information is true, accurate, and complete — before Submit becomes available. A successful submission shows a reference number, the submission date, and the return/due amount, matching Box 14.

Offline filing option

EmaraTax also lets registrants download an Excel template, fill it offline, and upload it back into the return — useful for businesses with a lot of line items to prepare outside the browser first.
