UAE Tax Penalties: Late Registration, Filing, and Payment

Why registration, filing, and payment are separately enforced, and what Voluntary Disclosure is for.

The FTA treats late registration, late return filing, and late payment as three distinct compliance failures, each carrying its own administrative penalty — being on time for one doesn't excuse being late on another.

Late VAT registration

A business that crosses the mandatory VAT threshold has 30 days to register. Missing that window can trigger an AED 10,000 penalty, on top of VAT liability applied retroactively from the date the threshold was crossed.

Late filing and late payment are separate

Filing a return on time but paying the tax due late still triggers a penalty for the late payment specifically. Filing late carries its own separate penalty, calculated independently of whether the payment itself was on time.

Voluntary Disclosure

If an error is discovered in an already-filed return, the correct route is a Voluntary Disclosure — proactively notifying the FTA — rather than quietly adjusting a later period's return. Voluntary disclosure is generally treated more favorably than the FTA discovering the same error through an audit.

Penalty amounts change — verify before acting

Specific penalty figures are set by FTA Cabinet Decisions and can be updated. For any real filing decision, verify the current official penalty schedule at tax.gov.ae rather than relying on any single course or guide's figures indefinitely.
